Everybody else is doing it, so why can’t I?

I had the most surreal experience the other day with our team’s IT guy over lunch. This is a guy who has been married for more than a decade and has children. He is undoubtedly nerdy, complete with high-waisted pants and worn-down copies of Network Administration books. He eats breakfast in the cafeteria in front of his laptop. Also, he said the other day, that he likes Sarah Palin.

Anyway I brought it upon myself; I asked him if he was voting in November, and who he was voting for. My manager, who was sitting between us at the lunch table, had laughed and warned me against talking about politics. The IT guy answered anyway. And then the Sarah Palin remark.

I said, disbelieving, “But she’s a creationist!!!”.

My manager started laughing louder and chided me again. “What do you care, anyway, you’re not American”.

True. But still. I could not believe that anyone who is obviously intelligent, who knows his math and his science, would pick as vice president anyone who is a creationist. A creationist, FFS! Who thinks that creationism should be taught beside evolution as an alternative theory, despite no scientific proof whatsoever. I swear to God. My voice went up a couple of pitches, but not out of anger but out of disbelief.

I swear to God sometimes people, no matter how intelligent they are, are so fucking stupid.
